Room 901 was inspired by significant changes in art that were influenced by photographic practices of the time. In 1977 Rosalind Krauss published an article in October in which she proposed the ‘art of the index’ or ‘the photographic’ as a new paradigm of 70s art. Krauss was responding to the work of artists who experimented with installations as a way to capture “the paradox of being physically present but temporally remote”.  Room 901 was also influenced by these new concepts, which were taken further by fragmenting the exhibition of the work between studio, commercial gallery and museum spaces.

This recent iteration of Room 901 is the subject of a reflection on the modalities for re-enactment of a site-specific intervention, and provides the opportunity to examine the variable status of a work, its documentation and its exhibitions. This newest re-enactment of Room 901 brings forth all the traces and signs that bear witness to its successive exhibitions, in such a way as to re-invest it with new knowledge and narratives that are unceasingly contributing to the (re)production of its history.
