Sorel Cohen made her mark on Montreal’s art scene beginning in the 1970s with her feminist and conceptual approach to photography. This book provides an opportunity to look back on some of Cohen’s major works in conjunction with the retrospective exhibition held by VOX, centre de l’image contemporaine in 2021–22.

Texts by Thérèse St-Gelais and Dot Tuer contextualize the feminist positions and conceptual issues that have characterized the photographic and sculptural practice of the artist. An essay by Marie J. Jean demonstrates how Sorel Cohen used the performative potential of photography to reflect on her condition as an artist and women’s place in art history. The visual section of the book allows us to measure the importance of the methodology devised by Sorel Cohen through a selection of emblematic and lesser-known works, while the biobibliography compiled by Claudine Roger exposes the biographical facts and critical points of view that have marked turning points in the artist’s career.
