Gerard Byrne
Gerard Byrne lives and works in Dublin, Ireland.
He is a graduate of National College of Art & Design in Dublin, the New School for Social Research and the Whitney Independent Study Program in New York. He uses photographic, video, and live art to exploit the ambiguities inherent in historicizing the legacy of cultural forms, from theatre to magazines, all of which have traditionally been accorded the role of representing society to itself. His work was part of the biennials of Gwangju, South Korea and Sydney, Australia (2008), Lyon, France (2007), Istanbul, Turkey (2003), as well as the Tate Triennial, London (2006). In 2007, Byrne represented Ireland in the Venice Biennial. Solo exhibitions have been held, among others, at the Gulbenkian Foundation Lisbon (2012); IMMA Dublin (2011); Lisson Gallery, London (2009, 2007); the ICA Boston; the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen, Denmark (2008) and the Charles H. Scott Gallery, Vancouver (2007). A Thing is a Hole in a Thing it is Not was presented Lismore Castle Arts, Glasgow, Scotland (2010) and at the Renaissance Society, Chicago (2011). A recipient of the Paul Hamlyn award in 2006, Gerard Byrne is represented by Lisson Gallery in London, Green on Red Gallery in Dublin, and Galerie Nordenhake in Stockholm, Sweden. He has been a professor at the Royal Danish Academy for Fine Art since 2007.
