Marina Gržinić

Marina Gržinić lives and works in Ljubljana, Slovenia and Vienna, Austria.

She is a doctor of philosophy, a researcher at the Institute of Philosophy of the ZRC SAZU (Scientific and Research Center, Slovene Academy of Science and Arts), and a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, as well as a freelance media theorist, art critic, and curator. She has published hundreds of articles and essays; her latest book is entitled Situated Contemporary Art Practices. Art and Activism From (the East of) Europe (ZRC SAZU and Revolver, 2004). Since 1982, Gržinić also has an artistic practice, mostly in collaboration with Aina Šmid (a professor of art history and editor for an interior design magazine in Ljubljana). They have presented their award-winning projects—over 40 videos, a short 16 mm film, an interactive CD-ROM, various documentaries, productions, and media installations—all around the world. In 2003, a retrospective of their work was held at the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, Germany, an event followed by the release of a DVD compilation of their production since the early 1990s (INDEX project, Vienna, 2004) and a publication dedicated to their practice (Performative, political and technological.
