John Baldessari was born in 1931.

He received a B.A. and an M.A. from San Diego State College. He has been a leading light for an entire generation of artists who followed his teachings at Southwestern University, California, the University of California at San Diego, and the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia (CalArts). Baldessari’s work has been exhibited internationally in solo exhibitions, including at the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig, Vienna; Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Sonnabend Gallery, New York; Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany; Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston; Santa Barbara Museum of Art; and Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid. He has also shown his works in many group exhibitions, including at the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston; Documenta 4, 5 and 6 in Cassel, Germany; the Venice Biennale; Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels; Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Kolnischer Kunstverein, Cologne; and at the Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial in New York. In 2009, he was the subject of a major retrospective at the Tate Modern in London, which in 2010 is travelling to the Museu d’Art Contemporani, Barcelona, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
