Allen Ruppersberg is an American conceptual artist born in 1944. He is known for his philosophical approach to art as he explores language as a means of expression. Working in a variety of media, including painting, photography, printmaking, books, sculpture, and installation, Ruppersberg draws inspiration from mass media and consumerism, critically assessing the inescapable relationship between vernacular objects and popular culture. He was one of the major practitioners of installation art, exploring themes of everyday life, cultural mythologies, and societal narratives. Ruppersberg has participated in three Whitney Biennials (New York) and has been in over 60 solo exhibitions and more than 200 group shows worldwide.
