In Praise of the Missing Image
2025.09.10 - 11.29
In a world saturated with images, some, strangely, are lacking. This edition of MOMENTA Biennale d’art contemporain aims to open up multiple perspectives for experimentation and speculation on the nature, uses, and production of missing images. With the theme In Praise of the Missing Image, the 2025 Bienniale explores both contemporary challenges in relation to the image and the current consequences of the complex dynamics involved in constructing narratives. Which stories are told, how, and by whom?
Deployed in fifteen locations across the city, the Biennial program will bring together 23 artists from here and abroad, representing 15 countries, 4 provinces and 5 Indigenous communities.
Frida Orupabo. On Lies, Secrets and Silence
As part of this edition, VOX presents the exhibition On Lies, Secrets and Silence by Frida Orupabo. Frida Orupabo explores historical representations of Black bodies through collage, reassembling female figures to reveal tensions tied to identity, memory and the gaze. In On Lies, Secrets and Silence, she draws us into the domestic sphere, a space of both intimacy and control. Drawing from colonial archives, vernacular photography and online images, she creates constellations of gazes in which viewers find themselves both observing and being observed. She questions the power structures shaping visibility throughout history, and composes an iconography in which her subjects reclaim political, aesthetic, and erotic subjectivity.
This exhibition is presented by MOMENTA Biennale d’art contemporain and produced in partnership with VOX, centre de l’image contemporaine. The exhibition is made possible thanks to the support of the Office for Contemporary Art Norway.
