How have the images produced in the 1980s transformed our cultural history? In what ways have they helped shape 21st-century thinking?

In celebration of its 40th anniversary, VOX presented an art event that, in keeping with its mission of supporting research into and presentation of image practices, revisited a period that marked its history and that of Québec. The exhibition brought together nearly forty photographic and videographic works along with visual referents emblematic of the time.

This companion publication comprises essays, interviews and artistic interventions by some fifteen researchers and artists examining the impact of the 1980s on our world today. Their contributions from diverse disciplines—politics, literature, nocturnal studies, fashion, environmentalism, technological transformations, the art ecosystem, the status of artists, the history of exhibitions—afford a cross-cutting and stimulating reading of a complex decade with critical and creative resonances that continue to inform our present.

This publication is made possible through the financial support of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the UQAM Faculty of Arts.
