Nicole Gingras

Nicole Gingras is interested in images, be they visual, aural, textual, or in other forms. Her research is concerned with space, movement, and various perceptual phenomena manifesting themselves via sound art, kinetic art, experimental cinema, and exploratory video practices. The exhibitions and programs she curates, the publications under her direction, her writings, and the seminars she conducts deal with such notions as time, the processes of remembering, and the movements of thinking. She has curated many monographic exhibitions presented in Canada and abroad, the most recent of which were devoted to the works of Diane Obomsawin and Chantal duPont. She has also curated major thematic exhibitions, including Machines – The Shapes of Movement, a series of 14 shows for the Manif d’art de Québec 2012, and has worked regularly with festivals, such as the International Festival of Films on Art (FIFA), since 2003, as well as distribution centres including Groupe Intervention Vidéo (GIV). As an author of critical and analytical texts, she has a particular fondness for the interview as a means of exchange with her artist subjects, and heads les éditions nicole gingras, an independent publishing house specializing in artist’s books.
